It's no secret that the Cotswolds is one of England's premier destinations for antiques shopping. Whether you're looking for large pieces of furniture for your home, or small and easily portable pieces of decorative ephemera to easily carry away at the time, you will find a shop or an antiques centre for every taste.

The Malthouse Collective  

If you're looking for a one-stop shop for antiques, you must visit The Malthouse Collective, the largest antiques centre in the Cotswolds. This enormous 19th-century industrial building on the outskirts of Stroud houses over 60 dealers selling their diverse wares under its roof, alongside its justly popular café, Brick & Brew. The Malthouse is particularly good for everyday antiques for the home.

Trading from a charming 18th-century granary barn in a rural Cotswolds farmyard between Cirencester and Cheltenham, the eponymous Sasha specialises in what the trade euphemistically calls 'smalls' — easily portable antique and vintage decorative items that she describes as the pieces that make your house a home, from Regency teacups and Wedgwood plates to vintage French champagne buckets and Georgian candlesticks. The barn is open by appointment during the week, and for drop-ins over most weekends during the summer months.

Manfred Schotten Antiques 

Amongst the famous Georgian buildings of the tourist magnet town of Burford, you will find Manfred Schotten Antiques, who specialise in sporting antiques. Whether you are seeking 19th-century golf irons, a mahogany box of vintage dominoes, a set of croquet mallets or motoring memorabilia, this is the place to find it.

Cirencester Antiques Centre 

The capital of the Cotswolds, beautiful Cirencester is always worth visiting to admire its glorious Georgian architecture. Just steps from the medieval Church of St John the Baptist and housed in a historic 16th-century timber-framed building in the Market Place, Cirencester Antiques Centre is home to over 80 dealers, specialising in modern and antique jewellery, china, fine silver, ceramics, glassware and watches. Arranged over two floors, make sure you explore it thoroughly as there are multiple tiny rooms packed full of treasure.

Stow-on-the-Wold 

Pretty Stow is a shopping magnet for both Cotswolds inhabitants and the legions of tourists who visit the area. Second only to Tetbury for the number of antique shops found within the town, the diverse nature of its stores means it's always worth a visit. 

Lennox Cato Antiques and Works of Art 

With an antiques business established in 1978, and now one of England's leading antiques experts, Lennox's passion for 18th and 19th-century English furniture led him to become one of the furniture specialists on BBC One's Antiques Roadshow. His stunning Broadway store is always beautifully merchandised and is notable for the warm welcome it gives absolute beginners and seasoned collectors alike.

Station Mill Antiques 

Smart Cotswolds homeowners have Station Mill Antiques on their speed dial, thanks to its curated mix of interesting antique and vintage English and French furniture, as well as small decorative pieces and vintage art. Situated on the outskirts of the market town of Chipping Norton and spread over two levels with a floor space of 11,000 square feet, each of the eighty dealers creates their own unique look within their spaces, yet somehow the whole effect appears beautifully curated. (We particularly like the furniture offerings from Goodwin Adams and from One The Hall.)

Durham House Antiques and Tudor House Antiques 

A few doors down from each other on Stow's Sheep Street, both Durham House and Tudor House are reason enough to visit Stow. Both shops deliver exactly what you would expect from a traditional, beautifully put-together English antiques shop, and some of the area's most interesting dealers display their stock within their walls — from Damon Blandford's English furniture and Natasha Kennerley's folk art at Durham House, to Jill Roddan's fabulous mix of country pieces and John Sheppard's samplers, early textiles and oak pieces at Tudor House.

Christopher Clarke Antiques 

You may not be familiar with the concept of campaign furniture, but after a visit to the hugely knowledgeable Clarke brothers in the shop on the corner of Sheep Street, you will discover all there is to know about antique furniture made to collapse for travel. Established for over 50 years, Christopher Clarke Antiques is the only antiques shop worldwide to specialise in military campaign furniture and travel-related items, which includes folding chairs, games tables and four-poster beds, as well as travelling bookcases, cutlery and decanter sets.

Tetbury 

Often referred to as the home of antiques in the Cotswolds, the charming town of Tetbury is home to a wonderful collection of dealers who tend to trade at the upper end of the market; consequently, its shops have become a beacon for interior decorators and discerning collectors. For the rest of us, the town is worth a visit for both inspiration and aspiration.

Much of the appeal of renowned dealers Brownrigg — the brainchild of Jorge (George) Perez-Martin and David Gibson — lies in their incomparable eye.
