As the final weddings of the year draw to a close, something rather magical begins to happen. Across the wedding industry, we affectionately refer to autumn and winter as "proposal season". That wonderful time between September and Valentine's Day when countless couples take the next step in their love story.

With crisp countryside walks, cosy fires, twinkling lights and festive celebrations bringing families together, it's no surprise that Christmas and the New Year remain the most popular time of year to get engaged.

As a Cotswold wedding photographer, I'm often contacted by partners hoping to keep one of life's biggest moments completely under wraps. One of the questions I'm asked most is, "Can you secretly photograph my proposal?" The answer is always yes, and it's one of my favourite things to do.

Unlike a wedding day, proposals happen quickly. They require careful planning, discreet communication and a little bit of stealth. I'll usually arrive early, scout the location, blend into the surroundings and wait for the perfect moment. Capturing genuine surprise, happy tears and those first few quiet moments together after the question has been asked is always the best part.

Another question I hear regularly is, "Where should I propose in the Cotswolds?" Thankfully, we're spoilt for choice. Whether you're dreaming of countryside views or something a little more intimate, there's a setting to suit every couple.

Somewhere Scenic

For couples who love the outdoors, the Cotswolds offers some truly unforgettable backdrops. If dramatic views are your thing, Broadway Tower provides panoramic scenery stretching for miles. But in the cooler months, a sheltered setting can be just as magical (and a little less windy). The beautiful gardens at Cowley Manor Experimental, with their mature trees, winding paths and elegant surroundings, offer a romantic alternative that feels peaceful and timeless, whatever the season.

Somewhere Charming

Perhaps your perfect proposal is wandering hand in hand through one of the Cotswolds' honey-stone villages. Early morning strolls through places like Bibury, Castle Combe or Broadway offer quiet streets, charming cottages and picturesque corners around every turn.

Somewhere Cosy

Not every proposal needs a spectacular viewpoint. Some of the most meaningful moments happen somewhere warm and familiar. Imagine returning from a countryside walk before settling into a traditional Cotswold pub, complete with roaring log fires, exposed stone walls and candlelight. Somewhere like The Double Red Duke creates exactly that atmosphere. It's relaxed, intimate and perfect for celebrating with a glass of champagne once you've heard that important "yes".

Somewhere Romantic

For those wanting something completely personal, consider creating a space that's just for the two of you. A private hotel suite or private event space can be transformed with candles, flowers and love letters, creating an incredibly romantic setting that's sheltered from the winter weather. It also gives you the opportunity to slow down afterwards, soak up the excitement together and simply enjoy those first moments as an engaged couple.

The beauty of the Cotswolds is that it offers all these possibilities within a short drive: spectacular scenery, charming villages, cosy pubs and elegant country hotels. It's a place that naturally lends itself to romance in every season.

So, as the nights draw in and festive lights begin to appear, don't be surprised if you see someone quietly admiring the view with a camera in hand. It might just be me, waiting to capture another unforgettable "yes".

Charlotte's Top Tips

Keep the weather in mind. The British weather loves to surprise us, particularly during autumn and winter. If you're planning to propose outdoors, have a nearby indoor option in mind or embrace the elements, they often make for wonderfully atmospheric photographs.

Plan around the daylight. The days become much shorter at this time of year, so don't underestimate how early the sun sets. If you'd like beautiful natural light photographs, aim for late morning or early afternoon rather than the evening.

Think about other visitors. The Cotswolds is a popular destination all year round, especially at weekends and during the holidays. If privacy is important to you, consider proposing on a weekday or earlier in the morning when many of the most loved locations are a little quieter.

Keep it simple. If you're considering having your proposal photographed, my biggest piece of advice is not to overcomplicate it. Choose a place that already means something to you both, or somewhere that reflects who you are as a couple. The location doesn't need to be extravagant; the emotion is what makes it unforgettable.
