In a quiet corner of the Cotswolds, a new name is redefining modern British jewellery design. Sophie Cudworth, award-winning designer and gouache artist, creates bespoke jewels that bridge centuries of craftsmanship with the intimacy of personal storytelling. Her latest triumph, an exquisite £40,000 peridot necklace suite, has already garnered acclaim on the world stage, winning Gold in the Fuli Sponsored 2D Design category at the prestigious Goldsmiths' Craft and Design Council Awards 2024.

The necklace, commissioned by a private collector, features 32 carats of vivid Fuli peridot and over 100 grams of 18K yellow gold. The suite glows with a luminous energy of what Cudworth calls "a new shade of green." The challenge; to create a piece that celebrated peridot in its purest form.

"No diamonds, no other gems, just pure peridot," Sophie explains. "It's both the centre stone and the accent, which gives it a vibrancy that mixed gems would have lost."

Behind the Design

The Legend of Longmen (Dragon Gate): Every year, koi carp battle upstream to a mighty waterfall. Only the most tenacious and brave of the fish are able to leap through the dragon gate at the top to be transformed into dragons. As they pass through the gate, they are for a moment, both fish and dragon.

Sophie shared some of her process to creating the necklace:

"This necklace is inspired by the moment of transformation. The line between potential and actual, the innate strength and power that was always present in the koi carp and the moment is it reborn as a dragon. It is a reminder that those who achieve great things always have the potential for greatness." She says. "I wanted to capture the fluidity of the body of the fish and dragon as an intricate chain. As the links interweave they transform from scales on the right to dragon scales on the left. At its centre, a lock clasp represents the mighty gate itself, with water emblems engraved on the reverse of the pendant."

The piece took more than six months to bring to life, each stone individually cut to specification and every contour meticulously considered.

A Modern Custodian of a Centuries-Old Craft

Sophie Cudworth belongs to a rare group of contemporary designers who still work in the traditional technique of gouache rendering; a centuries-old art form used to translate imagination into precise technical drawings for the goldsmith's bench. Painted at double scale, each rendering becomes both blueprint and heirloom, a work of art in its own right.

"I adore the use of colour," Sophie says, "and gouache allows me to bring my designs to life long before they exist in metal or stone. My clients receive their original painting with the finished piece. It's something they can treasure alongside the jewellery itself."

Trained at the Birmingham School of Jewellery, Cudworth spent 17 years working alongside some of the UK's finest jewellers before launching her eponymous brand in 2022. Her accolades include the Goldsmiths' Award for 2D Design (2024), Retail Jewellers' 30 Under 30 (2016), and a shortlist for Jewellery Designer of the Year (2015). These credentials have secured her place among Britain's most promising fine artists of form and gemstone.

The Bespoke Experience

To commission a piece with Sophie is to embark on an intimate creative journey. Each project begins with conversation. "Every commission starts with a getting-to-know-you chat," she explains. "I want to understand who the jewellery is for. Their story, their personality and what it should mean to them."

Clients are invited to bring along heirlooms, loose gemstones, or simply ideas, which Sophie distils into mood boards and preliminary sketches. Through this dialogue, she captures not only her clients' aesthetic but their sentiment. This process ensures that each design is as meaningful as it is beautiful.

From here, the process evolves into technical artistry: gouache renderings, CAD modelling (if required), and collaboration with Britain's top goldsmiths. Every design is made with integrity; no hollowing, no compromise, and a lifetime warranty as standard.

The final reveal, whether in her studio, a client's home, or her favourite cafe, is always a highlight. "Seeing gemstones transformed into dazzling new heirlooms always brings a smile to my face, especially when it suits my client so well."

A New Direction for an Ancient Gem

The award-winning peridot suite marks a turning point not just in Sophie's career, but for British jewellery at large. In a world of mass production and AI-driven design, Cudworth's devotion to hand-painted renderings, and the unmistakable human connection they bring, feels almost radical. Her work embodies the true spirit of bespoke luxury: deeply personal, meticulously crafted and entirely unique to the individual.
