Seven Fabulous Farm Shops

WORDS BY Katie Jarvis

The best gift you could give to the Cotswolds this season is to support its incredible farmers and food producers. And why wouldn’t you!

Local, fresh Cotswold produce is guaranteed to put the tastiest quality festive fare on the table. And here are five of the farm shops that stock just about everything you’ll need:

Cobbs at The Farm:

King’s Lane, Snitterfield, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 0QA

01789 731807

Cobbs says:

"Cobbs is a unique food destination on the outskirts of Stratford-upon-Avon: a place to while away a

few hours with family and friends or to pick up your weekly food shop!

Once upon a time, our home was a fruit farm, popular locally for pick-your-own; but, after a

huge re-development of the site back in 2017, we now offer customers so much more.

"We have a farm shop, café (complete with Gozney pizza oven!), delicatessen, traditional butchery,

cookery school, workshops, farm animals, and a fantastic outdoor space for all the family to enjoy.

We support local brands and champion independent suppliers from our own and neighbouring

counties."

Cobbs’ USPs are:

We are proud to champion the immense amount of artisan produce on our doorstep, and promote ethical, wholesome, sustainable food.

Don’t miss out on:

Christmas at Cobbs! Order free-range, award-winning turkeys; take home local dry-aged beef; buy stunning trees, gorgeous gifts, and everything in between to make Christmas special.

Wotton Farm Shop

Bradley Rd, Wotton-under-Edge GL12 7DT

 01453 521546

Paul Grimes of Wotton Farm Shop says:

"We’ve become something of a one-stop shop - up near 100 suppliers – with everything from Hobbs House bread delivered daily, to apple juice from Our Small Farm about half a mile away. We make sure our fruit and veg is as fresh as can be: hardly anything is wrapped in plastic. What’s more, you can come and buy one carrot, if that’s what you want.

"We’ve got around 25 cheeses on our counter, including Cheddar Gorge, Colston Bassett Stilton, and Somerset Brie. We stock a small amount of meat, such as free-range Creedy Carver chickens and local sausages. We also grow bedding plants.

"We’ve our own kitchen on site – we put heaps of cheese in our quiches, which is what makes them so good! Sausage rolls are a big seller; we also make a range of ready-meals each day."

Wotton’s USPs are:

Our passion is displaying our fruit and veg: you’ve got all those colours to work with, and I really enjoy making it look good. It’s a kind of theatre!

Don’t miss out on:

We’ve just taken on a range of Italian pizzas – they’re blooming lovely and flying out the door.

The Organic Farm Shop

Abbey Home Farm, Burford Road, Cirencester GL7 5HF (but please use map, not postcode)

01285 640441

The Organic Farm Shop says:

We love that people enjoy and benefit from the incredible variety of organic food we grow here on the farm. We produce all our own meat – beef, pork, lamb and chicken – and around 60 percent of the veg (except in the hungry gap), including (more unusually) red peppers, aubergines, sugar snaps, cucumbers, and six varieties of tomato in season. Provenance is key: we know where the fresh food comes from and that it has been grown ethically. In the café, during the week we offer one vegan and one vegetarian dish of the day, and a soup that’s always vegan. We also make seven fresh salads each day, inspired by the garden. Even our simple green salad usually has eight different leaves and herbs. Sunday is the one day we serve meat from the farm: everyone can have an often all-home-grown roast dinner, including vegans, vegetarians and gluten-freers.

The Organic Farm Shop’s USPs are:

Because we grow to organic standards, without pesticides, the biodiversity on the farm is fantastic: badgers, rabbits, hares, deer, and a thriving bird population, including barn owls and kestrels.

Don’t miss out on:

Our ready meals – very popular – such as homemade cottage pie: vegetarian or beef; our eggs and honey.
